Voices from the Dust Bowl: the Charles L. Todd and Robert Sonkin Migrant Worker Collection, 1940 to 1941

In this collection from Library of Congress, you can find and listen to more Okies' music in the work camp. From 1940-1941, Charles Todd and Robert Sonkin visited the Arvin FSA Camp and recorded the live music during Saturday performance or dance. Besides audio recording, Todd and Sonkin also took many pictures of the Okies' performance and life in the camp. Furthermore, they even conducted a few interviews with the Okies asking why they move to California.

On the left, you will find the Migrant Workers’ Songs in California. It is the field notes that describes the events they attended, the performers’ name and background information, and the performance context. In one part of the diary, Todd and Charles mention how they set up the recording machine for the music performance during “A dance [that] was scheduled for the evening (Saturday night) (Todd and Charles, 3).” The description aligns to the episode in The Grape of Wrath when the Joads arrived at the government and partook the Saturday night dance. In this exhibition, many of the exhibited songs and music transcripts are mentioned in the Todd and Sonkin’s writing. Moreover, you can learn more about the artists through reading the Migrant Workers’ Songs in California.
