Here is what a meal may have looked like for Okies before they left for California. This is a photograph of a typical "noonday dinner," or lunch at a restaurant in Oklahoma. This particular meal consists of meat, sliced tomatoes, beans, corn on the cob, potatoes, dumplings, corn bread and butter, tea and coffee, various jellies and preserves and onions. Similarly, one of the Joads' last meals at home before they head out on the road in their jalopy includes side-meat, beet greens, biscuits, and coffee (103).
