The challenge of migration
These two images that Dorthea Lange took are images of families on the road to California. They show the rough and dangerous conditions that these families, often with small children, had to endure to get to California. The first image shows the ways that the families slept in a small tent. This family in particular had seven children to cram into the small tent. The tent is also exposed and very fragile. A single large gust of wind could easily take the tent flying. The second image is of a small family walking along the road. The father is pulling the small child and some items in a wagon, but other than that, the family is forced to carry or leave all of their belongings.
These images relate to and differ from Grapes of Wrath. In the novel, the Joads only have so much money, not very much may I add. They do have a wagon to travel in and to pack the family and belongings in. In this case, the Joads and Grapes of Wrath make the journey seem a bit more bearable.
